Dosage form | Mucoangin®

Dosage form

Mucoangin® is taken for sore throats as part of pain relief. It is available in pharmacies in the form of lozenges. There are two flavours available: wild berry and mint.

The tablets should dissolve slowly in the mouth, as this ensures the longest possible duration of action. Mucoangin® can be taken by adults and children from the age of 12 years. A maximum of six lozenges per day should be taken. If the sore throat needs to be treated for a period longer than 3 days, a doctor should be consulted.

Contraindications

No relevant interactions are known to date when Mucoangin® is taken simultaneously with other drugs.

Metabolism

The active ingredient in Mucoangin® is quickly and completely absorbed by the body. Maximum plasma levels of the drug are reached in the blood within 1 -2.5 hours. When comparing the intake as a lozenge with the intake as a juice, it can be seen that an increased amount of the active ingredient is absorbed when the lozenge is taken, since the absorption can already take place in the oral cavity via the mucous membrane.

Ambroxol is rapidly absorbed from the blood into the tissue, where it develops its effect. About 30% of the ingested amount of the active ingredient of Mucoangin® is broken down in the body by the so-called first-pass mechanism. In connection with the intake of drugs, the first-pass effect means that the drug is rapidly metabolized during its first passage through the liver.

Therefore, the first-pass effect is of great importance in the taking of drugs and the systemic effect on the body. The greater the first-pass effect, the lower the systemic effect in the body, since the active ingredient is quickly eliminated and therefore has less time to act systemically. Most of the Mucoangin® active ingredient Ambroxol is excreted via the liver. Therefore, patients with limited liver function may have to expect elevated drug levels in their blood.
