Dosage | Naratriptan

Dosage

Naratriptan is taken in a dosage of 2.5 mg as a tablet. The tablet can be taken independently of meals. Initially the treatment is started with 1x 2.5 mg.

If there is no improvement in symptoms, a second film-coated tablet can be taken 4 hours after the first one. The maximum dose of 2x 2.5 mg in 24 hours must not be exceeded. Patients with severe liver or kidney failure should never take more than one tablet in 24 hours.

Is Naratriptan available over the counter?

Naratriptan is the first drug from the group of triptans to be available over the counter from pharmacies. The main reason for this is that it has been found that the possible side effects described do not statistically occur more frequently under the drug than with a placebo preparation. Nevertheless, Naratriptan should only be taken after careful consideration and consideration should be given to consulting a doctor before taking it.

This doctor should assess whether the headache is also a migraine headache. Only mirgae and cluster headaches can be treated with Naratriptan. The treatment of a tension headache, for example, is unsuccessful.

Price: Naratriptan is available in pharmacies, but not on prescription. There are two tablets in one package. Depending on the manufacturer, the package price is 2.95 EUR to 5.57 EUR.

Naratriptan in contrast to almotriptan

Both drugs are dispensed over the counter in pharmacies and are used in the treatment of migraine and cluster headaches. The effect of almotriptan usually sets in somewhat earlier than that of naratriptan. The effects and side effects of both drugs are similar.
