Doxepin | These drugs help to treat depression

Doxepin

Doxepin is an antidepressant from the group of tricyclic antidepressants (like amitriptyline). It has a relatively strong damping effect and is therefore often used in patients who are prone to severe restlessness and sleep disorders during depression. It can also be used for anxiety disorders.

It should be taken in the evening so that the dampening effect can have a positive effect on night sleep. The possible side effects are similar to those of amitriptyline. The most common side effects are dry mouth, problems with focusing the eyes in the near vision range, problems with urination and defecation, and palpitations.

Doxepin is not considered an antidepressant of choice during pregnancy and lactation. A new adjustment to Doxepin should therefore not be made during pregnancy. However, if a patient has been treated with Doxepin antidepressants before the start of pregnancy, consideration should be given to continuing the therapy to prevent a recurrence of the depressive symptoms. There is no evidence of a teratogenic effect of Doxepin, but other agents have been better studied for use during pregnancy.

Opipramol

Opipramol belongs to the tricyclic antidepressants. Although it belongs to this group, the mode of action is different. It is not yet clear exactly how Opipramol works.

However, it does not appear to inhibit the reuptake of neurotransmitters like all other members of this group. Opipramol is used for the treatment of depression, restlessness and anxiety, and in some cases also for the treatment of insomnia. If it is used for sleep disorders, it should be taken in the evening.

Opipramol has a mood-lightening and calming effect.Side effects include fatigue (sometimes a desired effect in the treatment of insomnia), dizziness, nausea and sexual dysfunction. The side effects usually occur more severely in the first few weeks of taking the drug and then decrease significantly. Several studies have been carried out on the use of Opipramol in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but a damaging effect on the fertility of the women has not yet been proven. Nevertheless, during pregnancy it is better to use another antidepressant for treatment.
