Drowning: Prevention

To prevent drowning, attention must be paid to reducing individual risk factors.

Typical drowning

Behavioral causes

  • Consumption of stimulants
  • Drug use
  • Poor physical condition
  • Inexperienced swimmers
  • Overestimation of their own strength
  • Cocky behavior

Prevention factors

The following preventive measures and behavioral rules can minimize the risk of drowning:

  • Before bathing, accustom the body to the water temperature, especially if the air temperature is significantly higher than the water temperature.
  • Children should never go swimming unsupervised!
  • Private pools and swimming ponds should be secured by fences.
  • Life jackets should never be dispensed with during appropriate ventures!
  • Avoid unknown waters.
  • Do not make head dives into unfamiliar waters.
  • Do not overestimate your own strength.
  • Do not enter the water under the influence of alcohol.
  • Prefer to swim in guarded waters.
  • Beware of frozen waters!
  • Do not underestimate water currents. Warnings always take seriously.
  • If you ever find yourself in a position where you are exhausted in the water and are not near the shore, you can recover briefly in the “dead man” position (full body floating with your back in the water).
