Dry and chapped lips in the baby

As with adults, babies’ lips may tend to dry out more often and may even tear. In the long term, however, this symptomatology can also be well controlled in babies by early and appropriate care. Due to the immature immune system, however, care products should be chosen with care products that are safe for the baby.

What can you do if your baby’s lips are dry?

Dry lips in babies usually require care with moisturizing or fat-donating products. Many of the well-known household remedies are suitable for this purpose, although special care is required with some of them. Honey for example should be avoided if possible, since this natural product may contain bacteria or fungus spores that could be dangerous for the organism of an infant.

Fat-containing creams like milking fat or marigold ointment as well as olive oil are considered harmless. If the baby is still being breastfed, even rubbing mother’s milk into the lips can lead to an improvement of the symptoms, as they are also very rich in fat and nutrients. When using purchased products, care should be taken to use natural preparations wherever possible, as babies tend to lick and swallow the substance applied frequently. A look at the ingredients and the avoidance of large amounts of chemicals is therefore highly advisable before use.

Application of baby oil

In principle, oil is well suited for the care of dry lips. However, since babies often lick off and swallow the applied substances, they should also make sure that the oil contains as few chemicals as possible. Olive oil, for example, is well suited as a natural product, since it is basically also easily digestible. In the case of baby oils, you should read through the ingredients beforehand and consult your doctor or pharmacist if necessary. Most preparations are generally also harmless, as they are specially made for babies. However, they are usually intended for use on the skin, so an additional look at the label in advance certainly cannot hurt.
