Duration and prognosis

The duration of the dizziness attacks varies depending on the cause. While in the case of positional vertigo, the dizziness usually improves after only one or a few minutes, an attack in Menière’s disease usually lasts for over 10 minutes or even hours. Migraine causes dizziness lasting several hours or even a whole day.

Dizziness caused by inflammation of the inner ear or its nerves does not go away until this inflammatory reaction has subsided, usually after one or more days. The prognosis of dizziness attacks also varies depending on the cause. Some diseases are characterized by recurrent attacks or relapses, such as Meniere’s disease, migraine or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Other diseases, such as vestibular neuritis, can be treated so that the inflammatory reaction subsides and dizziness no longer occurs.
