Duration and prognosis

Since pus can occur in the lungs due to various causes, it is difficult to give an indication of the duration and prognosis of the disease. If acute purulent bronchitis is present, it is usually overcome after about two weeks. As with other diseases, pneumonia can be complicated or uncomplicated, and its duration varies accordingly. If the pus has a different cause, such as a tumor, it is also difficult to make a statement about the prognosis and duration. However, it can generally be said that factors such as the age of the patient, general health, concomitant diseases and lifestyle play an important role in the duration of a disease and its prognosis.

Lung abscess as a complication

A lung abscess can be a health complication in the lungs. An abscess is a tissue melting and accumulation of pus as a result of inflammation in an encapsulated cavity. It is usually caused when pathogens enter the lung via the airway and cause an inflammation. Lung abscesses can occur as a result of primary diseases such as tumor diseases, irreversible bulging of the large bronchial tubes or foreign bodies in the lungs. Therapeutically important is the timely drainage of the abscess.Mahr on our page Lung abscess

Blood poisoning as a complication

As a potentially life-threatening complication of pus in the lungs, blood poisoning can occur. This is also known medically as sepsis and is a sign that the body’s own immune system is no longer able to contain the existing inflammation and fight it locally, but that the inflammation continues to spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. In this dangerous situation, the body reacts extremely and sets off a chain reaction that can cause extreme damage to the body and organs. Typical symptoms are a very high or low body temperature, a high heart rate, very fast or very slow breathing, changes in blood count and signs of malfunction of at least one organ system.
