Duration and prognosis
Anyone who has a pseudoallergy should expect it to cause lifelong complaints. The cause of a pseudoallergy is probably genetic. That some people have a pseudoallergy and others do not is probably due to the nature of the mast cells: If these are unstable and can be activated more easily, the development of a pseudoallergy is more likely. Unfortunately, hyposensitization, as it is done with real allergies, does not work with pseudoallergies, because the cause is not the hypersensitive immune system. Long-term relief is therefore most likely to be achieved by adapting one’s lifestyle accordingly.
Difference to neurodermatitis
Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin disease in which severe itchy rashes, typically in the bends of the arms and the back of the knee, have usually occurred since childhood. This is usually accompanied by hypersensitive skin. Neurodermatitis can take on a similar appearance to the rash caused by a sweat allergy.
However, the two diseases usually differ in their occurrence, as neurodermatitis is not suddenly triggered by sweat or warm temperatures, but rather the existing complaints are only made worse by them.In addition, neurodermatitis is usually accompanied by some other characteristics of the skin which indicate a general excessive sensitivity. A final diagnosis, also with regard to the distinction between these two clinical pictures, should however be made by the dermatologist because of the danger of confusion.
