Duration | Diarrhea in Egypt

Duration

Most diarrheal diseases, regardless of the pathogen, subside after a few days. If the diarrhea persists, a doctor should be consulted or re-introduced. Some diseases, such as malaria, can lead to diarrhoea in addition to fever.

Course of disease

Diarrheal diseases can progress differently depending on the pathogen. They all have in common a high stool frequency and the excretion of liquid or mushy stool. In immunocompromised or chronically ill people as well as small children, the course of the disease can be more drastic even with the “rather harmless” germs.

Children in particular run the risk of dehydration, i.e. developing a lack of volume or water, due to the loss of fluid. For this reason, it is also advisable for these patient groups to consult a doctor immediately if diarrhoea occurs. • With the rather “harmless” pathogens, diarrhea is usually self-limiting, i.e. it subsides after a few days.
  • Serious diarrheal diseases, for example caused by parasites, can lead to secondary diseases in the course of the disease. Serious or persistent diarrhea should therefore always be clarified by a doctor.
