In the case of respiratory alkalosis as a result of hyperventilation, the duration depends on how long the patient breathes more, which leads to an increase in the pH value. Often the patient is still a little groggy afterwards and needs some rest to calm the body again. Metabolic alkalosis, on the other hand, can lead to an increase in the pH value for various reasons.
Patients should always consult their doctor and get to the bottom of the cause. – If alkalosis occurs as a result of chronic vomiting, this can be an indication of a serious disease such as anorexia or bulimia. Such an eating disorder is a lifelong disease that will always accompany the affected person.
The prognosis depends on various factors. In most cases, the symptoms improve quickly after the cause has been eliminated and the general condition of the person affected improves. – In the rarest cases, life expectancy is reduced by alkalosis.
