Duration | Headaches behind the eye

Duration

The duration of the headache also depends on the underlying cause. Cluster headaches, for example, only last up to 3 hours, whereas migraines can last up to 3 days. Both diseases are peculiar in that they occur more frequently.

The frequency and triggers are individually very different. Headaches due to sinusitis usually continue until the decongestant effect of the nasal spray has set in, which can last three to four days. The symptoms of acute glaucoma or arteritis temporalis, on the other hand, usually disappear quickly as a result of adequate therapy.

Prognosis

The prognosis for headaches behind the eye is generally good in terms of a reduction in symptoms, as they are not usually caused by more serious diseases. However, a cure is not possible for all possible causes, such as migraine. Even if the symptoms of acute attacks can be alleviated by therapy, this is still only a symptomatic therapy and the further occurrence of pain attacks can be expected. In contrast, the prognosis of acute diseases such as acute glaucoma or inflammation of the temporal artery, on the other hand, depends largely on the length of time before therapy is initiated. In both diseases, there is a risk of permanent damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to unilateral blindness or significant visual impairment.

Can this be a brain tumor?

Even if a brain tumor cannot be clearly ruled out at first without an imaging procedure, its presence is rather unlikely in most cases. In most cases, such a tumor presents itself by its slowly progressive growth with long-lasting increasing symptoms, such as progressive visual impairment. Although the presence of solid tumors in children is very rare, they have an increased risk of developing a so-called retinoblastoma.

This forms on the retina and almost always occurs in the fifth year of life. However, the presence of such a tumor can be excluded with a simple examination under certain lighting conditions.
