Duration

Itching in the vagina can occur in the context of various diseases. In this context, acute clinical pictures such as a fungal infection or bacterial vaginosis clearly predominate. Much rarer are vaginal or vulva carcinomas or chronic diseases such as lichen sclerosus.

The duration of vaginal itching, however, is highly dependent on the underlying cause and the treatment that has been given. Thus, an untreated vaginal infectious disease leads to persistent itching. Unfortunately, this does not go away without appropriate treatment.

If fungicidal or antibiotic therapy is initiated, the itching usually subsides very quickly. Improvement can be expected within a few hours. After about two to three days the itching usually disappears completely.

Very rarely, malignant tumors can lead to persistent itching. Typically, this type of itching does not improve despite various attempts at therapy and then eventually leads to the suspected diagnosis of a tumor.
