Duration of a capsule rupture on the finger

Introduction

A torn capsule on the finger is a very unpleasant matter. Those affected suddenly suffer a stabbing pain that remains pulsating and the joint swells strongly. A torn capsule requires therapy and should be presented to a doctor immediately. Even if the acute symptoms last only a few days with targeted therapy, the healing process in the case of a torn capsule on the finger takes several weeks.

What has a positive effect on a torn capsule on the finger

Immediately after the injury, the PECH scheme is recommended to keep the swelling and pain under control. The P for rest means to take it easy, E for ice advises cooling, C for compression stands for a compression bandage to prevent swelling, and H for elevation to reduce pain and temporarily reduce blood flow. After the acute phase, further measures can be taken to favourably influence the capsule rupture.

In order to reduce the swelling and pain, a drug treatment with analgesic, decongestant active ingredients is suitable. These can be applied to the affected joint in the form of ointments. Ointments with ingredients such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or acetylsalicylic acid also have an anti-inflammatory effect.

The capsule can also be cooled from time to time. Whereas in the past it was recommended to completely immobilize the capsule rupture, we now know that targeted physiotherapy has a positive effect on healing. It is recommended to take care of the affected finger joint, but to move the joint carefully several times a day. This also helps to reduce bruising more quickly.

What has a negative effect on a ruptured capsule on the finger

The healing of a torn capsule on the finger can be negatively influenced by continuing to place a heavy load on the affected joint. In particular, strong force can prevent the joint capsule from healing. In addition, refraining from treatment can cause lasting damage to the affected capsule. If one continues to move or completely immobilizes the joint for a very long time, bending or stretching deficits can occur in the affected joint and normal joint function is disturbed.

Duration of the entire healing process

The healing process typically takes several weeks for a ruptured capsule on the finger. The symptoms, swelling and pain, subside after a few days, especially with cooling, gentle measures (PECH scheme). Nevertheless, the affected capsule must grow back together again in the event of a rupture and this requires several weeks of healing.

Duration of a sick leave

A torn capsule of a finger requires rest and protection during the healing process, apart from specific physiotherapy exercises. How long a sick leave is necessary is strongly determined by the profession and the requirements. If the affected finger is put under heavy strain, the person affected should be put on sick leave until complete healing, i.e. for several weeks. Normally, the affected person would only be put on sick leave for one or two weeks and the doctor would extend the sick leave accordingly. If one practises a profession where the finger is spared, one can continue working immediately with conservative treatment.
