Duration of a cystitis

The duration of a urinary tract infection varies from woman to woman. In general, a urinary tract infection lasts about 1-2 weeks. This does not mean, however, that the affected woman suffers from the typical symptoms for more than 2 weeks.

After starting antibiotic therapy, the symptoms usually become significantly less after 1-3 days, and after about 1 week they should have disappeared completely. However, this does not mean that all pathogens are eliminated from the urinary tract. Incidentally, cystitis can occur again and again – much to the chagrin of many women – and is then referred to as recurrent urinary tract infection.

There are some studies that indicate that regular intake of cranberry preparations, for example in juice or tablet form, reduces the risk of recurrent cystitis. However, other studies have not been able to prove an advantage of cranberry over placebo, so there are no valid recommendations in this regard.
