Duration of a kidney augmentation

The duration of kidney enlargement again depends on the cause. If, for example, the urinary calculus is lost in a stone disease, the kidney can regain its original size relatively quickly. In this case, it also depends on the particular clinical picture. If the mother’s kidney becomes enlarged during pregnancy due to constricting anatomical conditions, a rapid normalization of the size can be observed after the birth of the child.

Renal enlargement of the right/left kidney

Physiologically, the right kidney is smaller and lighter than the left. If bacterial inflammation is the cause of the enlargement of the kidney, it is not necessarily the case that the second kidney is also affected. However, this may be the case, for example, in an ascending urinary tract infection.

In the large number of pregnant women, an enlargement of the renal pelvicocaliceal system can be observed. Here, the right ureter is often displaced due to an increase in the size of the uterus and a temporary increase in the size of the caliceal system of the right kidney occurs. In hereditary polycystic kidney disease there is an involvement of both kidneys. Solitary kidney cysts can occur on one or both sides, these are often free of symptoms and are often discovered as a random finding.

Kidney enlargement in the baby

In babies, an enlarged kidney can occur in connection with a narrowing of the ureter directly at the outlet from the kidney (ureteral outlet stenosis). This can be caused by a disturbance of the smooth muscles, which is accompanied by disturbed peristalsis in a segment of the ureter and thus hinders the flow of urine from the kidney. On the other hand, misplaced vessels can cause a narrowing of the ureter in the upper part of the ureter, but also an abnormal position or altered shape of the kidney. In this case it is important to monitor the kidney function closely in order to initiate possible therapeutic measures. Parents should also pay attention to the amount of urine in their baby’s diaper.
