Duration of a rash with wheals

A skin rash with wheals can be a very fleeting event that disappears within 24 hours. However, there are also rashes that last for several weeks. Some rashes with hives are chronic or chronic-recurring, so they occur repeatedly throughout life. This is highly dependent on the cause of the rash.

Skin rash with wheals in children

Skin rashes with wheals can occur in childhood. Often children are affected who are pre-suffering from neurodermatitis. About 15 % of the children suffer from this so-called atopic eczema.

They generally have a tendency to diseases from the allergic group and often also have asthma, hay fever or other allergies and food intolerances. Allergic skin rashes with wheals are also not uncommon. Not only food allergies, but also bee and wasp stings are frequent triggers of such a rash. However, parents often confuse the classic childhood diseases such as measles, mumps and rubella with their spotty skin rashes with urticaria at first. Typically, however, children are not “sick” with urticaria and do not show any fever or symptoms such as cough and rhinitis.

Skin rash with wheals during pregnancy

Skin rashes with wheals can also occur during pregnancy. These can have very different causes. In principle, the same causes can be hidden behind such a rash as outside a pregnancy.

However, there are also special skin changes that only occur during pregnancy. About one in 200 pregnant women suffers from polymorphic dermatosis during pregnancy. This itchy skin disease occurs in the last weeks of pregnancy or immediately after pregnancy and is characterized by severe itching and quaddel-like skin changes.

These are called urticarial papules. The itchy skin changes disappear after pregnancy and do not reappear. Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is a very rare disease that can also lead to quaddel-like skin rashes during pregnancy or when taking a progestogen-only pill.

This manifests itself through the spontaneous appearance of various skin changes that can affect the entire skin and are volatile. This means that the skin changes come and go. However, the disease is very rare.
