Duration of oral thrush | Mouth rot in the baby

Duration of oral thrush

In addition to the individual condition of the baby, which plays a major role in healing, there is a certain time frame in which the disease takes place. In the course of the incubation period there are fever attacks, which can last for about 4-5 days. During this time the gums begin to swell slowly without hurting.

After the first 5 days the typical vesicles develop, which are mainly on the palate, tongue and gums. After these are broken open, ulcers develop, which dry out and heal over time. The duration of this process depends on the severity of the infection and takes about 1-3 weeks until the entire rehabilitation. It is important that during these weeks a regular check-up with the doctor takes place, so that the virus cannot spread further unnoticed. Otherwise, quick action must be taken and an antiviral agent such as Aciclovir must be prescribed.

When can my child go back to the daycare center?

Since mouth rot is a highly infectious disease, it is advisable to wait until the little ones are no longer infectious before visiting a day care center. Only when the blisters have completely healed should the babies have contact with their peers again, otherwise there is a risk of infecting the other child. Especially the first contact with the virus is problematic, because only through this the mouth rot can develop. In case of reinfection the virus spreads in the lip and shows itself as widespread lip herpes.
