Duration of sore throat and difficulty in swallowing

The duration of sore throat with difficulty swallowing varies. Mild colds can be accompanied by sore throats and difficulty swallowing and can disappear on their own within a few days. However, more severe courses can also occur in the context of a cold or a real flu, these often last up to ten days.

If a bacterial infection is present, the symptoms often disappear within one to two days after the first antibiotic administration. Then it is particularly important that the amount of antibiotics prescribed by the doctor is taken until the end. In total, 9 out of 10 patients are symptom-free again after one week. When should I see a doctor for sore throat and difficulty swallowing?

As a rule, sore throats with difficulty swallowing heal on their own. However, there are some circumstances in which a doctor should be consulted. One warning that should not be ignored is high fever: if the body temperature exceeds 38.5°C, a doctor should be consulted, especially if you suffer from severe fatigue, muscle and limb pain.

The same applies if the pain is so severe that it is almost impossible to eat or drink. In these cases, a disease requiring antibiotics is more likely. In principle, the sore throat and difficulty swallowing should have subsided completely after about a week.

If this is not the case, or if the symptoms increase in the course of time, a doctor should also be consulted. Rarely can a bacterial disease be detected by the patient himself – if white spots (so-called specks) are visible on the palatal tonsils when looking into the mouth, a visit to a doctor is just as essential. If a layman does not recognize any spots, this does not replace a visit to the doctor.
