Duration of the application | The tooth gel

Duration of the application

The duration of application is variable due to the variety of products and modes of action. While tooth gels are used for regular fluoridation once a week to prophylactically maintain oral health, tooth gels containing chlorhexidine digluconate are used only occasionally or for a few days at a time until the symptoms of inflammation disappear. Also the application of tooth gels for babies and infants for indication of the tooth are used only occasionally and are not suitable for permanent use. In the case of products that treat hypersensitive dental necks, the duration is at the discretion of the dentist and is carried out until the complaints subside. Due to the variety of products, it is important to strictly adhere to the package insert and to ask the dentist treating the patient for advice in case of questions or uncertainties.

Tooth gel against pain

In case of pain-sensitive necks of teeth, the solution is tooth gels, which are able to reduce the hypersensitivity of teeth. The reason for the unpleasant spots are often cleaning defects caused by too firm pressure or “scrubbing” when brushing teeth. The pressure at the transition from tooth to gum causes the thin gum to retract and expose the dentin. The dentin is characterized by its dentine channels, which are connected to the dental pulp in which the nerve and blood vessels are located that produce the hypersensitivity of these areas.

The dentin is actually covered by gum in these areas and is now exposed naked. The tooth gel now closes these dentine channels so that external stimuli caused by heat or cold can no longer reach the tooth pulp directly. The tooth appears sealed and the pain disappears.

However, the gel can only provide temporary relief, as it wears off after some time. Applying the gel two to three times a week can quickly combat pain symptoms, but dental treatment is necessary for long-term pain relief. Dental gels with fluoridation can also combat pain-sensitive teeth.

They work by allowing the fluoride particles to settle in the enamel and strengthen it so that it is better protected. The fluoride gel may be used once a week and is also used prophylactically to reduce the risk of caries. To relieve pain when babies teething, there are tooth gels with the local anaesthetic lidocaine, which anaesthetize the soft tissues and thereby relieve the pain.
