Duration of the healing process | Torn ligament at the wrist

Duration of the healing process

The duration of complete healing of the torn ligament of the wrist depends strongly on the severity of the injury. In the case of a partial tear and the subsequent application of a plaster cast, immobilization of the wrist can be expected to take about 4 – 6 weeks. However, if surgery is necessary, the forearm is immobilised for the next 6 – 8 weeks. The prospect of subsequent freedom from symptoms depends primarily on the patient’s cooperation and the extent and age of the injury.

Duration of incapacity for work

In the case of a torn ligament on the wrist, the duration of sick leave depends on the severity of the injury and the healing process. Typically, the wrist is immobilised for at least four to six weeks, so that sick leave is required over this period. If surgery is necessary, the person can be put on sick leave for a few months.

As a result, a torn ligament in the wrist will require sick leave for about six weeks to three months, depending on the constellation of findings. Under certain circumstances, a sick note can be extended until the person concerned is able to work again.
