Duration of the nasal septum surgery

A nasal septum operation usually takes between 30-50 minutes. If other additional measures are taken in addition to the correction of the nasal septum, the operating time is extended accordingly.

Duration of healing after nasal septum surgery

Usually the healing process of the nose starts after a few days. Patients often report that the nose becomes freer from day to day and that it is easier to breathe through it. Consequently, sleep becomes better and more pleasant.

After a few days the sense of smell returns completely. In most cases, the nose has completely recovered within 2-3 weeks. In case of inpatient surgery, the hospital stay usually lasts between 3-7 days.

Duration of sick leave for a nasal septum surgery

Usually the patient is put on sick leave for two weeks. Depending on the field of activity and the healing process, the sick leave can be extended for another week. If, for example, the work is accompanied by heavy physical strain, an extension of the sick leave may be justified.

Tamponade at the nasal septum surgery

In many cases a nasal tamponade is inserted into the nose after the operation. It is intended to absorb bleeding and prevent adhesions between the septum and the turbinates. Since the septum is still unstable after the operation, it should support it.

It varies how comfortable or uncomfortable it is to wear the tamponade. In some cases the tamponade can cause pressure pain in the nose and head area, as well as irritation of the neck. The tamponade can disturb the patient during the night and possibly prevent him from sleeping.

Usually the tamponade is removed after 48 hours. This can also be unpleasant for a short time. If the patient exhales while the tamponade is being pulled, the procedure seems to be more comfortable.

Nasal septum surgery without tamponade

In some cases a tamponade is not necessary. Due to the patients’ discomfort when wearing a tamponade, silicone foils are increasingly used instead. There are various scientific studies that show that alternatives to tamponade can achieve the same goals and have fewer disadvantages. Further studies are planned. The renouncement of tamponades after nasal septum surgery is controversially discussed.
