Duration of the treatment
The duration of treatment depends on the causes and nature of the complaints. Minor injuries or bruises of the menisci can be free of complaints after a few days. Such injuries are also not an indication for surgery.
Knee joint arthrosis is a chronic degenerative wear and tear of the joint cartilage and usually requires years of treatment. Meniscus resection: Minor operations on the menisci, such as a meniscus resection, require a few weeks of physiotherapy as follow-up treatment, but the ability to work is usually restored after 1 to 2 weeks. Meniscus suturing: The situation is different with meniscus refixation (meniscus suturing).
Here, a longer follow-up treatment is necessary. In the first few weeks after the operation, an extension splint is worn to immobilize the knee. After about 3 weeks, the movement is resumed.
Complete freedom of movement is achieved after about 6 months. Lighter sporting activities can be resumed after 2 months. Meniscus implantation: The time to partial weight-bearing is somewhat longer in this case, so that about 5 to 6 weeks of rest must be observed. Accordingly, physiotherapy is shifted slightly to the back, whereby overall freedom of movement should be restored after about half a year.
