Duration | Physiotherapy with an Unhappy Triad

Duration

Approximately 4-6 weeks after the operation of an Unhappy Triad, a partial weight bearing is to be maintained, which usually means that the leg may only be loaded up to approx. 20 kg. Depending on the demands of the job, it is possible to return to work a few weeks after the operation.

With the full load, activities such as cycling, walking without crutches and light weight exercises can be resumed. Approximately 3-4 months after the operation, light jogging is also possible again. However, the resumption of the usual sports activities with ball sports, martial arts or similar should only take place after about 9 months.

Summary

An Unhappy Triad is a combination injury of the knee joint, with lesion of the anterior cruciate ligament, the inner ligament and the inner meniscus. It is caused by twisting of the knee under compressive load and is characterized by pain, instability of the joint and severe swelling. In most cases an Unhappy Triad is treated surgically, whereby the anterior cruciate ligament is replaced and the torn off parts of the meniscus are removed. After about 6 weeks of partial weight bearing, strengthening and stability exercises can be started, but the usual sports activities should only be resumed after about 9 months.
