Duration/Prediction | Protein in urine during pregnancy

Duration/Prediction

Protein in the urine of pregnant women is not unusual if the amounts are small. It does not need to be treated and usually disappears again by itself during pregnancy or after the end of pregnancy. It is really rare that there are diseases behind it that lead to a loss of protein via the kidneys, which should then of course be treated accordingly.

Causes

Even young non-pregnant people can excrete protein in urine. In most cases, increased physical activity, emotional stress or mild hypothermia are the cause. During pregnancy, however, minimal protein loss through the kidneys is more common.

This is due to the fact that the blood circulation in the kidneys increases significantly, which also leads to an increase in the filtration rate. As a result, more protein first reaches the primary urine. Not everything can be reabsorbed later in the reabsorption process.

Thus, especially small protein molecules remain in the urine and are excreted via the bladder. This is physiological during pregnancy, i.e. quite normal. If the protein content is discreetly increased, this can be caused by fever.

An inflammation of the urinary tract (cystitis, inflammation of the renal pelvis) can also be the cause. It is also possible that pregnancy diabetes is present. The most serious disease, which can be hidden by protein in the urine, is pregnancy poisoning.

However, it is always accompanied by other symptoms. Also interesting: gestational diabetes or placental insufficiencyIn principle, it is especially important for pregnant women to ensure that they drink a sufficient amount of 2-3 liters per day. During pregnancy it is not unusual for small amounts of protein to be excreted in the urine.

If the pregnant woman does not drink enough, the urine is often more concentrated. Therefore the protein concentration also increases. This is ultimately harmless and not a cause for concern. However, the fluid deficit should be remedied and the urine should be tested again for protein in the next few days.
