Duration | Skin rash due to sun

Duration

Skin rashes caused by the sun usually heal relatively quickly. However, this also depends on the type of rash. A slight sunburn, for example, shows its maximum after 12 to 24 hours.

It usually heals within a week without any consequences. In the case of severe sunburn, however, healing may be somewhat delayed. A “light allergy” (polymorphic light dermatosis), as it is commonly called, heals in most cases within one week.

However, this also depends on the attentiveness of the person affected. If the skin is exposed to the sun again, healing is delayed or the rash even worsens. The situation is similar with photoallergic or phototoxic dermatitis.

The triggering substances and the sun should be avoided. Under these conditions the rash heals quickly. In rare cases, the course of the rash is longer.

Child’s rash

Like adults, children can also be affected by rashes caused by sunlight. Basically, these are the same conditions that plague adults. The most common symptom in children is sunburn.

Children’s skin is particularly sensitive and requires thorough care with sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). The symptoms are the same as for adults. There is redness, swelling, pain and itching. Severe sunburn can cause blisters to form and a general feeling of fatigue and fever can occur. Furthermore, photoallergic and phototoxic reactions of the skin can also occur in children. If children receive new medication and a sudden skin rash is noticed after exposure to the sun, an allergic reaction may be considered, which should be brought to the attention of the treating doctor.

Baby rash

Babies are very sensitive to strong sunlight. Therefore, their skin must be especially well protected to avoid sunburn or the like. In general, babies should not be exposed to sunlight for too long and above all not unprotected.

However, polymorphic light dermatosis (“sun allergy”) is less common in babies. Nevertheless, one should not take the chance and protect the children well. If babies show pustules, wheals and redness after sunbathing, it is quite possible that this is a light dermatosis.

This usually heals within one week without any consequences. However, the sun should be avoided during this time.
