Duration

Unfortunately, it is not possible to specify an exact time period for tongue burning. However, the course of the disease depends on the type of underlying disease. For example, if the cause is a wrongly fitting prosthesis, the problem can be quickly addressed and solved.

The same applies to allergies or fungal infections. However, if the cause cannot be found easily, tongue burning can become a lengthy process. Often only a reduction of the symptoms but no freedom from symptoms is achieved.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 is a vitamin that is necessary for the formation of new cells, especially blood cells, and the function of the nervous system. A severe deficiency becomes noticeable only after some time, but can then have far-reaching consequences. Blood formation is disturbed and causes anemia.

This can lead to Hunter Glossitis. This is an inflammatory change in the mucous membrane of the tongue, which is accompanied by a remodelling of the tongue’s mucous membrane. As a result of the remodelling, the tongue acquires a very smooth, red surface in which there are no furrows.

This is why it is also called varnished tongue. In addition to abnormal sensations, this disease is mainly associated with the symptom of a burning tongue. As therapy, it is recommended to fight the cause, in this case a vitamin B12 supply. It is present in many animal foods, especially meat and cheese, which is why vegan people often have problems with this disease. Since it cannot be administered in tablet form, a balanced diet is extremely important

Burning of the tongue caused by the thyroid gland

An underactive thyroid can also cause a burning of the tongue. With an underactive thyroid, also called hypothyroidism, the hormone production does not function properly and too little hormone is produced. Initially, only mild symptoms appear, which only gradually worsen.

Therefore, this disease is usually detected late. The effect of the hormones is manifold. For example, the heart, the release of insulin and the central nervous system are controlled by them. Receptors are present throughout the body. For this reason, a deficiency has an effect on the composition of the saliva and thus triggers a burning of the tongue.
