Dyslexia: Medical History

The medical history (case history) represents an important component in the diagnosis of dyslexia.

Family history

  • Are there any disorders in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed in your child?
  • How long have these changes been present?
  • What problems are present in reading and writing?
  • Does your child show a significantly slowed learning pace?
  • Was there a trigger for the problems? Sudden changes such as accidents, illnesses, etc.?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Is the child age-appropriate development (speech; motor skills)?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Operations
  • Radiotherapy
  • Vaccination status
  • Allergies
  • Environmental history
  • Medication history

The following tests are used to diagnose dyslexia:

  • Bielefeld screening for the early detection of literacy (BISC).
  • Standardized reading tests such as Salzburg reading and right writing test.
  • Standardized spelling test such as the Diagnostic Spelling Test DRT1-5.
  • Basic skills for reading and spelling performance (BAKO) to test phonological awareness.
  • Intelligence tests such as the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC).
  • Behavioral assessments
