Dyslexia

What is a dyslexia?

The reading and spelling weakness, also known as dyslexia, dyslexia, dyslexicism, and dyslexic disorders, is a highly pronounced, long-lasting disorder of learning the written language or written language. This means that those affected have difficulty writing down spoken language and reading written language aloud. It is assumed that about 4% of the pupils in Germany are affected by a dyslexia.

How can you recognize a dyslexia?

A dyslexia can be recognized by the fact that those affected make a particularly large number of mistakes in written work (texts or dictations). The children write words in many different variations and are unable to find the correct spelling on their own. They are unable to apply their knowledge or do not know how to solve the problem.

This leads to children with dyslexia guessing a lot and simply start writing. One can guess a dyslexia when children write much too hastily and forget letters or whole words, or again write conspicuously slowly and take much longer than the other children. A conspicuous sign of a dyslexia is a clear avoidance behavior of those affected.

The children try to avoid writing or reading aloud at school. In addition, children with dyslexia often become anxious at the announcement of a school dictation and are very worried about failing. Children who show signs of dyslexia may have difficulty understanding the meaning of what they are reading and expressing it in their own words.

When writing, typical signs are that the children make an enormous number of mistakes in dictations and texts. For example, they sometimes spell words in fragments and misspelled several times in the same text. Also typical are many grammar and punctuation mistakes, poorly legible handwriting and different font sizes within a text or even line.

Unfortunately, a dyslexia often leads to failures in various school subjects. Children may fail in school subjects even though they would actually be gifted in the subject, but are unable to develop due to their dyslexia. Failures and fears of failure can cause enormous stress, so that the affected children become aggressive and sad in their behavior and often develop a fear of school or psychosomatic complaints such as stomach aches and nausea.
