Echinococcosis: Complications

Consequential diseases or complications of alveolar echinococcosis (AE)

In 99% of all cases, the liver is the primary target organ, where the six-hooked larva (oncosphere) undergoes metamorphosis to become a metacestode.

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Secondary involvement of other organs, such as brain, lungs, peritoneum (peritoneal cavity) (metastasis outside the liver: affects approximately one-third of patients at initial diagnosis)

Liver, gallbladder and bile ducts – pancreas (pancreas) (K70-K77; K80-K87).

  • Cholestasis (biliary stasis)
  • Liver cirrhosis – connective tissue remodeling of the liver leading to functional impairment.
  • Portal hypertension – increase in blood pressure in the portal vein.
  • Pseudocysts of the liver – cyst-like structure in the liver, but which, unlike the cyst, has no epithelial lining

Consequential diseases or complications of cystic echinococcosis (ZE)

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts-pancreas (pancreas) (K70-K77; K80-K87).

Injuries, poisonings, and other sequelae of external causes (S00-T98).

  • Allergic reactions up to and including anaphylaxis (most severe form of allergic reaction; emergency)

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99)

  • Sputum*
  • Hemoptysis* – coughing up secretions containing blood.
  • Cough*

* in pulmonary involvement

Further

  • Formation of fistula connections, unspecified.
  • Cyst rupture
