Echinococcosis: Therapy

General measures

  • Observance of the general hygiene measures!
  • Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Alcohol restriction (abstaining from alcohol)

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Drug therapy is usually used for alveolar echinococcosis, as it is usually too late for radical surgery at diagnosis.
  • Therapy for cystic echinococcosis should always be performed in designated centers. In general, several therapeutic options exist:
    • Watch-and-wait – wait for inactive, asymptomatic cysts.
    • Drug therapy
    • Operative therapy
    • Puncture-Aspiration-Injection-Reaspiration (PAIR) – insertion of sterilizing solution into the cyst; concurrent drug therapy with albendazole is administered.
