Eczema on the buttocks of a toddler

Eczema on the buttocks of children and infants can have many different causes. In addition to streptococcal dermatitis, which is caused by bacteria and a fungal infection, one should also think of a worm disease, especially in day-care center children. Furthermore, a contact allergic anal eczema (see above) can always be the trigger.

If this is the case, care products, but also toilet paper and medicines used for the child’s bottom should be discontinued first. An atopic anal eczema (see above) is also a conceivable cause. In any case, if the anal eczema persists for several days, the pediatrician should clarify the problem.

Causes of eczema of the buttocks

Eczema of the buttocks can have many causes. Roughly speaking, they can be divided into infectious and non-infectious: non-infectious eczema, i.e. eczema not caused by pathogens, can be caused by a lack of hygiene, for example. Inadequate cleaning of the skin from contamination can cause inflammation.

But excessive hygiene with unsuitable cosmetics can also cause severe irritation of the skin and destroy the natural barrier. The same applies to severe mechanical irritation, for example caused by poorly fitting underwear. Contact allergies can also lead to eczema, which can be triggered e.g. by fragrances or textiles.

Chronic skin diseases, such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis, can also manifest themselves on the skin on the buttocks and lead to eczema there. Eczema of the buttocks also frequently occurs in bedridden patients who have been lying on the affected area for too long. These eczemas should be treated urgently as they can cause severe ulcers.

Also non-infectious but serious is a beginning skin cancer, which can also affect the buttocks. Therefore, a long-lasting, non-healing eczema should definitely be shown to a doctor. Infectious causes of eczema of the buttocks are pathogens that have been able to penetrate through small skin cracks and thus cause an inflammation. These can be various bacteria but also fungi and viruses.
