Effect | Cayenne pepper

Effect

The pungent substances (capsainoids) of cayenne pepper unfold their effect first through a local, increased blood circulation. Then they act on the nerves in the painful area. This releases muscular tensions.

The capsaicum from cayenne pepper inhibits the release of a messenger substance in the nerve endings. As a result, the pain signals can no longer be transmitted and the nerve endings recede under treatment. The pain is no longer transmitted after the therapy. The first effect sets in very quickly.

Dosage form

Cayenne pepper is available in the following dosage forms:

  • Plaster (heat plaster)
  • Ointment
  • Tincture

Presentation and dosage

The capsaicum content is responsible for the effect. Semi-fat preparations already require a capsaicum content of 0.02 to 0.05%, while liquid preparations require a maximum of 0.01% and plasters require 10 to 40 mg per cm2. It is advisable to use commercially available ready-made products, as cayenne pepper preparations should only be used externally. The desired effect is not achieved with smaller quantities. Overdosage may cause unpleasant side effects.

Side effect

The use of Cayenne pepper almost always leads to skin irritation. Itching, burning or reddening of the skin occurs. If the effect is too strong, the preparation can be removed with cold water.

Damaged skin areas and mucous membranes must not come into contact with cayenne pepper preparations. Caution with the mucous membrane of the eye! The eye is very sensitive and can be permanently damaged by the pepper.

The application period of ointments and creams containing capsaicum has so far been two days. According to the latest clinical studies, the treatment period can be extended. The amount of active ingredient of the medicinal herb cayenne pepper is decisive.

If the quantities are too low, the desired effect is not to be expected. Overdosage due to too high capsaicum concentrations may cause permanent damage to sensitive nerves. The correct dosage is therefore important. Please ask your treating physician! Capsaicum-containing preparations can cause allergies in sensitive persons.
