Effect | Floxal eye ointment

Effect

The active ingredient of Floxal eye ointment is called Ofloxacin. It is an antibiotic that interferes with the reproduction of bacteria. Ofloxacin interferes in the multiplication of bacterial DNA (replication).

For replication to take place, the DNA must be read and copied by certain enzymes. The DNA is twisted in itself, which is why it must be untwisted into a straight strand before reading. There are special enzymes for this task.

If an antibiotic acts against these enzymes, it is called a gyrase inhibitor. These only attack bacteria and not human cells, which lack the gyrases. Ofloxacin is one such gyrase inhibitor.

Thus Ofloxacin prevents the bacteria DNA from being unspiralized. Thus, it cannot be read off and multiplied. This prevents the bacteria from spreading further. The remaining bacteria are fought by the immune system and the inflammation heals.

Side effect

When using Floxal eye ointment, reactions of the eye such as redness, burning and slight pain may occur. Increased lacrimation, blurred vision or foreign body sensation may also occur. In addition, dry eyes may also occur from time to time.

However, these symptoms usually disappear by themselves after a short time. These symptoms can worsen under UV radiation and lead to photophobia. When using Floxal eye ointment, direct sunlight on the eye should therefore be avoided.

In addition, an allergic reaction may occur. This is particularly noticeable by swelling of the eye, the surrounding tissue or even the entire face.In very rare cases (less than 1:10. 000) an allergic reaction of the whole body (systemic allergic reaction) occurs.

This can manifest itself, for example, through skin symptoms such as redness and itching, difficult breathing, diarrhea, abdominal pain or vomiting. A drop in blood pressure also indicates a systemic allergic reaction. If such a reaction is suspected, a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Rarely (1-10. 000), deposits on the cornea (cornea), so-called vortexkeratopathies, occur. These heal after the end of therapy with Floxal eye ointment, usually without any consequences.
