Effect on anxiety | Effect of Lyrica

Effect on anxiety

Lyrica® acts on the cells of the so-called cerebellum. These cells are called Purkinje cells. It inhibits calcium channels at a certain point.

As a result, less calcium reaches the cell interior. As a result, less of the excitatory messenger substances, such as the so-called glutamate, noradrenaline and substance P are released. These messenger substances can, among other things, intensify the development of anxiety. By inhibiting their effect, fears can be (biochemically) reduced in some cases. This effect of the drug is called anxiolytic effect.

Effect on pain

Lyrica® has shown in several controlled clinical studies that it can also be effective in so-called peripheral neuropathic pain. These chronic pains are often described as tingling, burning, very severe or shock-like. Peripheral neuropathic pain can occur in conditions such as shingles, the so-called herpes zoster virus, spinal cord injury or diabetic neuropathy.

In this context, Lyrica® has been shown to have a soothing effect according to some studies. According to these studies, 47% of people suffering from neuropathic pain experienced an average pain reduction of 50%. In addition, pain-related sleep disturbances were significantly reduced.

Effect in MS

Lyrica® is used in multiple sclerosis for the symptomatic treatment of nerve pain. Here, the mechanism of action regarding the inhibitory effect on certain messenger substances is exploited. Since these messenger substances have an influence on nerve pain, this is where Lyrica® comes in.

Successful pain relief has been recorded. In other cases the side effects predominate. An individual treatment for multiple sclerosis is indispensable.

Can the effect of Lyrica® be enhanced?

The effect of Lyrica® can be enhanced by changing the dose. In addition, sedating substances (calming substances) can increase the active ingredient. Alcohol can also intensify the effect and thus also the side effect in a life-threatening way in an unforeseeable way.

Particular caution is required in the case of previous illnesses and weakness or limitations of the heart, especially in old age. In addition, great care should be taken with a combination of drugs that prolong the so-called QT time (in the ECG). In case of kidney dysfunction, lower doses must be given. Therefore, an amplification of Lyrica® should not be focused carelessly. If the effect of Lyrica® does not produce the desired results, the doctor should always be consulted first.
