Effect / Warming effect | Horse ointment

Effect / Warming effect

The plant extracts contained in the horse ointment have various effects on the skin. Depending on the composition of the individually applied ointment, different components may predominate and the ointments from different suppliers may thus differ from each other. The ointment is said to have a warming and circulation-promoting effect as well as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and cooling effect.

Rosemary and camphor are said to be responsible for the increased blood circulation and thus for the warming effect. The menthol contained in the ointment has a cooling effect. The arnica extract is said to have a pain and anti-inflammatory effect.

All in all, the horse ointment has no scientifically proven effect and no studies can be used as proof of its effectiveness. However, the effect of individual components of the ointment can be derived from other studies. Whether the effect of the horse ointment can provide relief from the individual clinical picture should be clarified by a treating physician, especially in the case of longer existing clinical pictures.

Ingredients

The ingredients which are found in the different horse ointments available on the market are always the same. Thus, extracts of camphor and rosemary as well as arnica and menthol are found in the ointments. Depending on the composition, the consistency of the ointment and its effect varies minimally.Since the different ingredients are responsible for different effects, the effect of the ointment can be slightly altered by varying the percentage distribution of the different ingredients. Information about which ointment can achieve the desired effect can usually be obtained from the pharmacist on request.

Side effects

As with almost all medications and treatment methods, the occurrence of side effects is also possible when using horse ointment. However, the number of side effects when using the horse ointment is limited. Thus, the components of the ointment are usually harmless when used correctly and do not lead to side effects even if used frequently.

Nevertheless, care should be taken to ensure that there is no allergy to the components found in the ointment, as this could lead to skin reactions or systemic allergic reactions. The ointment should also not be applied to mucous membranes and open wounds due to irritating effects. In wounds in particular, undesirable wound healing disorders can occur in addition to infections. It should also be noted that serious illnesses should not be treated with horse ointment in self-therapy without medical clarification and that a quick clarification is always recommended instead.
