Effects of drugs on the nervous system

The effects of drugs on the nervous system are still part of ongoing research. Some observations have been made that are related to the use of the substance. The hippocampus, the region of the brain responsible for memory, is reduced in size in cannabis users, resulting in a general deterioration in memory functions. The receptors to which the THC from cannabis binds play an important role in brain development.

That is why young people are particularly affected by the negative changes in the nervous system. A decrease in volume and function has been observed in various brain areas. Due to the degree of relationship between the two substances and frequent mixed or parallel consumption, many studies have highlighted the effect of both substances on the nervous system.

In many cases it was observed that the party drugs lead to a decrease in brain tissue in the frontal lobe (prefrontal cortex) and in the hippocampus (memory function). The frontal lobe is responsible for decision making and personality. The users who had extensive experience with the drugs also showed poorer memory performance, made poorer decisions in tests and showed reduced impulse control.

Consequences of drugs behind the wheel

It is strictly forbidden and also strongly discouraged to get behind the wheel under the influence of drugs of any kind. The effects of the various substances usually severely restrict the driver’s fitness to drive and thus lead to an increased risk of accidents. Alcohol and cannabis consumption in particular has a negative effect on driving skills.

Perception, reaction time and attention are greatly reduced. The supposedly focusing effect of amphetamines can also have negative effects behind the wheel – namely when the focus is on things other than road traffic. In addition to the health consequences for the user, passenger or other road users, driving under the influence of drugs also has legal consequences.

If the substance can be detected in the urine or blood, the driver must usually expect it. Regular drug tests, for example over a year, can also be arranged.
