Emser salt is commercially available as a powder, in the form of lozenges, as a throat spray, nasal drops, as a nasal spray and nasal ointment, among others. These are approved medicinal products and medical devices. The salt has been registered in many countries since 1934. Ems salt comes from a hot thermal spring in Bad Ems in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. The town is located near Koblenz and Frankfurt am Main.

Structure and properties

Emser salt is a powder produced by evaporation of Ems thermal water. It contains over 30 minerals and trace elements. The highest concentrations reach sodium, potassium, chloride, as well as the anions hydrogen carbonate, carbonate and sulfate. Solutions prepared from the salt are slightly basic (pH 8 to 10).

Effects

Preparations containing Emser salt (ATC R01AX28) have moisturizing, nourishing, expectorant, healing, cleansing, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Indications

Indications for use include:

  • Common cold, allergic rhinitis (e.g., hay fever), rhinitis.
  • Prevention of colds
  • Sinusitis
  • Dry nose
  • Cough
  • Sore throat, hoarseness
  • Bronchitis
  • Aftercare after surgical procedures

Dosage

According to the professional information. The pure salt is dissolved in water. The water quality depends on the type of application. Freshly prepared solutions should be consumed immediately, as they do not contain a preservative.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Bronchospasm after previous inhalations with Emser salt (inhalation).
  • In the case of direct connections with the fluid spaces of the brain due to injuries to the nasal roof and sinus walls.
  • Strongly increased tendency to nosebleeds

Adverse effects

Emser salt is usually well tolerated. Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as irritation, a burning sensation, and tingling. Nosebleeds occur very rarely. Inhalations may cause respiratory distress in very sensitive patients.
