Endometriosis: Prevention

To prevent endometriosis, attention must be paid to reducing individual risk factors.

Environmental pollution – Intoxications (poisonings).

  • Beta-HCH (by-product of lindane manufacture).
  • Mirex (insecticide)

Prevention factors (protective factors)

  • Breastfeeding: A prospective observational study demonstrated that mothers who breastfed their infants for a long time were less likely to develop endometriosis later (-40%):
    • Breastfeeding duration <1 month: 453 endometrioses per 100,000 person-years.
    • Breastfeeding period > 36 months: 184 diseases per 100,000 person-years.

For every three months of breastfeeding, the risk decreased by 8% (hazard ratio 0.92; 0.90-0.94)
