Live enterococci strain SF 68 is commercially available in many countries in the form of capsules (Bioflorin). The drug has been approved since 1979.
Structure and properties
One capsule of the drug contains at least 75 million live enterococci of strain SF 68. The strain is facultative anaerobic, tolerates the low pH of the stomach well, and multiplies rapidly (generation time 19 minutes). The bacteria, by the way, are and not as sometimes indicated .
Effects
Enterococci (ATC A07FA01) colonize in the terminal small intestine and colon and normalize intestinal flora by, among other things, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic agents.
Indications
For the treatment of changes and disorders of intestinal flora, for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea of various causes.
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. Infants, children and adults take 2 capsules per day for the prevention of diarrhea, and 3 capsules per day for treatment. The capsules can also be opened and the contents added to a cold or lukewarm drink. A treatment period of 5-7 days is recommended.
Contraindications
The drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.
Interactions
Antibiotics may kill bacteria and should be taken 1-2 hours apart.
Adverse effects
There are no known adverse effects.
