1st order laboratory parameters – obligatory laboratory tests.
- Small blood count
- Electrolytes – calcium, chloride, sodium, potassium and magnesium.
- Fasting glucose (fasting blood sugar)
- Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT).
- Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C or creatinine clearance, as appropriate.
- Creatine kinase (CK) [up to > 1,000 U/l; 24-48 hours after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure].
- Blood gas analysis (ABG), if applicable; determination of.
- Venous: pH, BE, HCO3 -, (lactate) [lactate ↑ = oxygen deficiency due to inhibition of aerobic glycolysis; here: Indication of generalized seizure that has occurred]
Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, etc. – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- Examination for toxins in blood and urine
- CSF puncture (removal of nervous fluid by puncture of the spinal canal) for CSF diagnostics – if encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) is suspected.
- Auto-Ak (IgG) against neuron nuclei type 3 (due toparaneoplastic syndrome).
