Epilepsy: Test and Diagnosis

1st order laboratory parameters – obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Small blood count
  • Electrolytescalcium, chloride, sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  • Fasting glucose (fasting blood sugar)
  • Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT).
  • Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C or creatinine clearance, as appropriate.
  • Creatine kinase (CK) [up to > 1,000 U/l; 24-48 hours after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure].
  • Blood gas analysis (ABG), if applicable; determination of.
    • Venous: pH, BE, HCO3 -, (lactate) [lactate ↑ = oxygen deficiency due to inhibition of aerobic glycolysis; here: Indication of generalized seizure that has occurred]

Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, etc. – for differential diagnostic clarification.
