Epilepsy: Therapy

Epileptic seizure: make an emergency call immediately! (Call number 112)

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Drug restriction (abstaining from drugs).
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Vagus nerve stimulation: placement of an electrode in the neck near the vagus nerve for seizures that cannot be controlled with medication. The exact mode of action is still unknown.

Vaccinations

The following vaccinations are advised:

  • Flu vaccination
  • Pneumococcal vaccination

Regular checkups

  • Regular medical checkups

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • If appropriate, a ketogenic diet for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy; ketogenic diets are high in fat and low in carbohydrates.
  • Observe the following special dietary recommendations:
    • Diet rich in calcium and magnesium
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
  • Detailed information on nutritional medicine you will receive from us.

Sports Medicine

  • Endurance training (cardio training: e.g., sports without significant risk (e.g., team sports, golf)Note: Patients with epilepsy should be encouraged to participate in sports. Sports or physical activity reduces comorbidities (concomitant diseases) and may also have a positive effect on seizure frequency.
  • Preparation of a fitness or training plan with suitable sports disciplines based on a medical check (athlete check).
  • Detailed information on sports medicine you will receive from us.

Psychotherapy

Training

  • Patient education:
    • Avoid triggering factors
    • Take advantage of psychological support, for example, in self-help groups

Note on the driver’s license

  • Driving license can be regained after a seizure-free interval of one year
