Epoetin theta is marketed as a solution for injection (EpoTheta-Teva, in some countries: Eporatio). It was approved in many countries in 2010.

Structure and properties

Epoetin theta is a recombinant glycoprotein produced by biotechnological methods. It is composed of 165 amino acids and has the same sequence as natural erythropoietin (EPO) produced in the kidney. The various recombinant epoetins differ in glycosylation pattern.

Effects

Epoetin theta (ATC B03XA01) stimulates red blood cell formation in the bone marrow (erythropoiesis).

Indications

For the treatment of anemia due to chronic renal failure and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The drug is administered subcutaneously or intravenously.

Abuse

Epoetin alfa can be abused as a doping agent, such as in cycling. It is included in the doping list and may not be used in professional sports outside of or during competition.

Interactions

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include flu-like symptoms, joint pain, headache, rash, and hypertension.
