Ergonomic office chair | Ergonomics at the workplace

Ergonomic office chair

One of the most important objects at the ergonomic workplace is the office swivel chair. It should, of course, be stable and tilt resistant and be equipped with at least five castors. It should also be roll-resistant.

An important element of the ergonomic office chair is the suspension when sitting down to relieve the spine from shocks. It should be possible to adjust the seat height between 42 and 50 cm – the seat is optimally adjusted when there is a right angle between the upper and lower legs and the heels are at the height of the hollow of the knee. The angle between the upper body and thighs should be slightly more obtuse and be 110-120 degrees. The backrest of the ergonomic office chair should be most protruding at the height of the lower back to relieve the lumbar spine.

A separately adjustable neck support can support the natural curvature of the spine and relieve the neck. Armrests can also relieve the shoulder and neck area, but they should be adjustable and end approximately at the height of the table to extend the support from the arms. Alternative office furniture such as a seating ball or similar must also comply with the requirements for ergonomic seating furniture.

Height-adjustable desk

The requirements for a height-adjustable desk are many and varied, but it is indispensable in an ergonomic workplace. If the desk is mainly used by one person, it can be adjusted specifically for that person. If the desk is used by several people, it should be quickly and easily height-adjustable to prevent tension and back pain.

Especially desks with a stand-sit function offer variety for monotonous work at the desk: Here it can be decided individually whether the worker wants to work standing or sitting. In recent years, various studies have shown that the back can be relieved and a shortening of the musculature caused by constant sitting can be prevented. The height adjustability should be between 68 and 118 cm.

Since these tables are very expensive to buy, however, you can switch to alternatives such as additional standing desks if necessary. Sufficient legroom and rounded edges and corners should also be features of the height-adjustable desk. Furthermore, there are recommended minimum dimensions for a height-adjustable desk, provided that the activity is mixed work, i.e. work is done at the desk and also at the PC. The dimensions should be at least 160x80cm. Depending on the type of monitor, the desk should have a certain depth to ensure the minimum distance to the monitor and thus an ergonomic workstation.
