Essential Oil Inhalation

Products

Essential oils for inhalation are commercially available as drops and in the form of effervescent tablets (e.g., Inhalant, Nasobol Inhalo, Pinimenthol, Olbas, JHP Rödler), among others. They can also be self-mixed or used individually.

Structure and properties

The products contain the following essential oils or their active ingredients, among others:

  • Cineole
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Spruce needle oil
  • Camphor
  • Levomenthol
  • Niauli oil
  • Peppermint oil
  • Rosemary oil
  • Thyme oil, thymol

Effects

The essential oils are effective against bacteria and viruses, among other things, are beneficial and soothing, loosen mucus, open the airways and inhibit inflammation. The water vapor moisturizes the mucous membranes.

Fields of application

For the treatment of colds and flu with symptoms such as cough and cold.

Dosage

According to the directions for use. Add the remedy to hot water (only about 60°C!) and inhale with a designated inhaler or with a cloth over the head. Inhalation can be done about three to four times a day for five to ten minutes.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Whooping cough
  • Infants, toddlers, children (depending on the composition).
  • Oral administration
  • Direct contact with mucous membranes, open wounds and diseased skin.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include respiratory irritation, runny nose, cough, skin reactions, and allergic reactions.
