Products
Estramustine phosphate is commercially available in the form of capsules (Estracyt). It has been approved in many countries since 1977.
Structure and properties
Estramustine phosphate (C23H30Cl2NNa2O6P, Mr = 564.3 g/mol) is an estradiol phosphate ester linked via a carbamate linkage to noritrogen solstice, and is a prodrug.
Effects
Estramustine phosphate (ATC L01XX11) has cytostatic properties with selective effects on prostate carcinoma. The metabolites inhibit microtubule formation and bind to the androgen receptor, resulting in inhibition of cell proliferation.
Indications
Advanced-stage prostate cancer, in both untreated and pretreated patients.
