Structure and properties
Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (C9H10O3, Mr = 166.2 g/mol) exists as a white crystalline powder or as colorless crystals and is very sparingly soluble in water. Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate belongs to the group of parabens. It is the ethyl ester of -hydroxybenzoic acid.
Effects
Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate has antimicrobial properties against fungi and bacteria.
Indications for use
As a preservative for pharmaceuticals. Ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate is also used for food and cosmetics, among other applications.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include allergic reactions.
