Ethylvanillin

Products

Ethylvanillin is found in many pharmaceuticals as an excipient, for example in suspensions, granules, chewable tablets, gels and ointments. It is also used in personal care products and foods.

Structure and properties

Ethyl vanillin (C9H10O3, Mr = 166.17 g/mol) is a derivative of vanillin, differing from it in one methylene group. It exists as a white crystalline powder with an aromatic odor that is sparingly soluble in water. The substance is produced synthetically.

Effects

Ethyl vanillin has an aromatic odor and taste. Unlike vanillin, smaller amounts are needed.

Fields of application

Ethyl vanillin is used in pharmacy as a flavoring and odorant for liquid, semi-solid and solid dosage forms.
