Eucalyptus: Effect and Side Effects

Eucalyptus leaves, sometimes due to the monoterpenes contained, have a mild antispasmodic effect and facilitate the expulsion of mucus from the respiratory tract. This is achieved mainly by increasing the activity of the so-called ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract, which are responsible for the removal of mucus and foreign substances. The feeling of a clear nose is probably due to stimulation of the cold receptors in the nose.

The monoterpenes also possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Eucalyptus: side effects

In very rare cases, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur when taking preparations containing eucalyptus. However, these side effects are only to be feared in case of overdose.

Interactions with other medications

Eucalpytus oil stimulates certain enzymes in the liver that are responsible, among other things, for the breakdown of foreign substances, including drugs. Therefore, when the oil is taken, there may be increased breakdown of various drugs and thus weakening and/or shortening of their effects.
