Eucalyptus oil capsules have been approved in many countries since 2016 (Sibrovita N). In Germany, they have been on the market since the 1990s (Aspecton Eukaps).
Structure and properties
Eucalyptus oil is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation and subsequent rectification from the fresh leaves or branch tips of various 1,8-cineole-rich eucalyptus species. It exists as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with an aromatic and camphor-like odor and a burning taste.
Effects
Eucalyptus oil has expectorant (secretomotor and expectorant) and antiseptic properties.
Indications
For the treatment of a productive cough associated with a cold.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. Capsules are taken two to three times daily with meals.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Children up to 12 years
- Inflammatory diseases in the gastrointestinal tract
- Inflammatory diseases in the biliary tract
- Severe liver disease
- Bronchial asthma, whooping cough, pseudocroup or other respiratory diseases associated with marked respiratory hypersensitivity.

Interactions
Eucalyptus oil may induce CYP450 isozymes and corresponding drug-drug interactions cannot be excluded.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and hypersensitivity reactions. Eucalyptus oil should not be overdosed, as this can lead to severe poisoning.
