EvaluationFindings | Ultrasound of the abdomen (Sono Abdomen)

EvaluationFindings

The Sono Abdomen, like any ultrasound procedure, provides real-time imaging, which means that the examiner can see images of the region under examination while the examination is still in progress. Therefore, the evaluation already starts with the examination itself. For example, the size of an organ can be measured directly or an inflammatory change in the gall bladder or pancreas can be displayed and documented by saving or printing images. At the end of the examination, a written report of all the organs examined is made on the basis of the recorded images. The findings are documented in the patient file and, depending on the agreement, sent to the family doctor, the doctor who requested the examination or to the patient, for example by post.

Risks

One of the great advantages of an ultrasound examination of the abdomen is that it is completely free of risks. The ultrasound waves used in the procedure have no negative influence on the human body and, unlike X-rays, for example, do not have any health consequences even if used more frequently.

Duration

The duration of the actual Sono Abdomen examination depends on the question posed and on the sound conditions, i.e. how well the organs can be visualized in the patient. The experience of the examiner also has an influence on the duration. An ultrasound of the abdomen usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. This does not include possible waiting times before the examination.

Costs

If an ultrasound examination of the abdomen is medically justified, the costs are fully covered by the health insurance. However, it is also possible in many practices to have the examination performed at your own request. This is a so-called IGEL service (individual health service), for which the patient must pay. Costs of about 50€ have to be expected. However, the prices can vary greatly depending on the practice and should be inquired about in advance.

How far do you have to undress from the abdomen during an ultrasound?

With ultrasound of the abdomen, it is often not even necessary to undress. It is only necessary to ensure that the entire abdomen can be cleared from under the breast to the groin. It is therefore sufficient to undress down to the undershirt or T-shirt and pull it up.

Also the trousers must only be pulled down to above the intimate area and opened if necessary. The underwear can be kept on in a Sono Abdomen in any case. In order to avoid contamination of the clothing with the examination gel, the trousers or upper part can be covered with disposable cloths.
